Vince Papale Supports Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice
Posted: January 25, 2012 Filed under: In the News | Tags: hospice, NJ, Samaritan, Vince Papale Leave a comment »Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice was excited to welcome Former Eagle Vince Papale, Kyle Ruffin, Founder of K Ruffin & Associates and Samaritan Board Chair Carl Buehler to the Media Imagery studio in Pennsauken yesterday!
Papale enlisted Samaritan’s expert care team and hospice services during his father’s illiness in 2001. He wanted to give back to Samaritan for the comfort and support he and his family received while his dad was seriously ill. Papale didn’t even hesitate when we asked him to participate in our video project. He graciously replied ”the honor is all mine. Thank YOU!”
Ben Bencivenga, President/CEO of Media Imagery, is generously donating time and resources to help Samaritan create a wonderful video that will allow Samaritan to increase awareness of, and access to, its hospice and palliative care services.
Kyle Ruffin joined Papale in support of Samaritan’s services. Ruffin accessed Samaritan’s grief support groups after the loss of her sister. After the shoot Ruffin added,”[It's] always an honor and a pleasure to help how ever I can. I could go on and on about how wonderful all of you are!”
Carl Buehler, VP of LRP&P Graphics, has supported Samaritan for many years. Samaritan also cared for his father. The Buehler Family makes supporting Samaritan a family affair. Each year at Samaritan’s annual golf tournament, Buehler’s three children man a lemonade stand and donate all of the proceeds to Samaritan.
Media Imagery will edit yesterday’s shoot for YouTube videos and a video that will premier at Samaritan’s upcoming Winter White, Midnight Blue Gala at the Mount Laurel Westin on February 25. Stay tuned for a video screening after the Gala!
What Samaritan Families Want You to Know

We receive wonderful and touching letters every day. Families express such gratitude for our services and staff. After we share them with the care team, we then call to see if we can share their words with you. Overwhelmingly, family members say YES! Please do! Definitely!

Our families want you to be informed about hospice and palliative care. They want you to receive the same expert, comforting services their family did – and still do. Families want you to know that calling Samaritan is getting help for your loved one, not giving up on them.
Having the Conversation Online
We also receive positive posts on our Facebook wall. We’re delighted to converse about their experience and share it with all of our friends. So many people are talking on Twitter too!

What are they saying?
Samaritan Hospice took care of my mom and our family for only two days before she passed, but the impact of the care and compassion she (and we) received will be with me for a lifetime. Truly a blessing during the most difficult time. Debbie D’Angelo Fuhs, on Facebook
It’s been a little over 4 years since my husband died. I still think about how wonderful Samaritan was to all of us in the last days of his life. The team of angels descended into our home with their peace and love. The care they gave my husband allowed him to be calm, to be free from pain, to be peaceful and to enjoy his family and friends. The care and compassion they also gave me is something I will never forget.
Letter from Debbie in Medford, NJ
Thank you for all the ways that you help people throughout the year. You are truly angels. Your caring and compassion is beyond reproach. I’m glad that I was able to experience your grief counseling when both my mother and father passed. It saved me. And have felt secure in the way you were taking care of a few friends that I’ve lost over the past year or two.
Arlene Bendel, on Facebook[We] were treated with so much respect, caring, kindness and understanding. Like little angles on earth. You made his journey to heaven an easier trip. I know he thought the same.
Anna WeaverI am writing to give kudos to the team assigned to my father’s hospice care…. My only regret, we did not get to know this team for a longer period of time. I am at peace knowing my father was only under hospice for days, not weeks or months, but at the same time, I sure wish I had gotten to spend more time with him and the best hospice personnel any where!
Jo Ann RepiciI would like to thank Samaritan for the extraordinary care given to our father in the last days of his life. Our entire large family felt supported by the wonderful staff of the inpatient unit at Virtua [Memorial]. We were able to be with our father continuously with constant medical, spiritual and emotional support at hand.

Five Reasons to “Like” Samaritan’s Facebook Page
Posted: January 12, 2012 Filed under: In the News | Tags: embrace each moment, Facebook, hospice, inspiration, palliative care, Samaritan, Samaritan Hospice Leave a comment »1. Hospice is about living, not dying.
Hospice isn’t a place you go. Hospice isn’t a place you call during the last few days of life. Hospice is a plan of care that provides a team of experts to help patients live the end of life in comfort, peace and surrounded by friends and family. People can receive hospice care if their doctor feels they have about six months to live if their illness follows its normal course. 6 months! A lot of living can be done in 6 months — especially when you have hospice physicians, nurses, social workers, home health aides, chaplains and volunteers to guide you through this journey. Our page will share the truths about hospice care.
2. Samaritan is more than just hospice.
Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice offers more than just hospice care. Our programs include: Palliative Medical Partners, Transitions, grief support, geriatric care management and community education. Our page will tell you all about them and how they can help you and your family – even if you don’t need Samaritan right now.
3. Samaritan’s philosophy is to embrace each moment.
Self explanatory. We’ll remind you in case you forget.
4. Plan and be prepared for the inevitable.
Everyone plans for births, graduations, weddings and anniversaries. But, people rarely plan for how they want to be treated when they are at the end of life. We’ll give you tips, tools, reminders and more.
5. Because so many families tell us that they wished they had called sooner for Samaritan’s services.
Knowledge brings power … and in the case of Samaritan’s services, comforting care and support. Keeping up-to-date on what services are available will help your family when the time is right and will also allow you to share the news with family and friends who may not know where to turn for help.
So consider yourself invited to join us on Facebook! Become our friend, learn about Samaritan and its programs, invite your friends to join us and, ultimately, help spread awareness about the truths of hospice & palliative care!
See you on Facebook!

“I wanted a perfect ending. Now I’ve learned, the hard way, that some poems don’t rhyme, and some stories don’t have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next. Delicious Ambiguity.” ― Gilda Radner
As the first anniversary of my mother’s passing approaches – she passed away in the early hours of Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, 2010 – my thoughts regress to how truly grateful my family and I are to Samaritan for everything your organization did for us during those final months and days. My mother’s quality of life was restored, and she was able to remain at my house until the very last day; her childen, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were able to spend quality time with her and we all truly learned how to “Embrace the Moment”… – Sharon Brown, written on Samaritan’s Facebook page wall
By far the best at what they do . Words cannot describe there dedication and compassion. – Greg Woodington, written as a Facebook recommendation

Grateful Family’s Christmas Light Display to Benefit Samaritan
Posted: November 29, 2011 Filed under: In the News | Tags: Christmas, Community, Grateful, hospice, Lights, Samaritan 3 Comments »Legacy of Lights
You’d fully expect the General Manager of the Christmas Tree Shop to have some pretty lights on his house, but Tom Ronketty has raised “pretty” to “pretty amazing!” When he and his wife Beth threw the switch on Thanksgiving night, their Marlton home’s holiday display shone with 106,000 lights and 27 inflatable characters.
What started out as “just a few lights” the year they were married, has grown over the last six years to “Christmas to the extreme,” said Beth. Along the way, the display has become a much anticipated neighborhood and regional “happening,” thanks to annual media broadcasts on Channel 3 and Channel 10 suggesting great displays for viewers to check out.
As it grew, said Beth, she and Tom (a.k.a Mr. Christmas) began to have an idea just how much the beauty and wonder of it meant to people. So many people tried to give them money to cover the electricity in appreciation of the joy the display had provided their children or grandchildren that the Ronketty’s set out a barrel drum and designated a worthy charity to receive voluntary donations.
This year, Beth and Tom designated Samaritan as a way to show their own appreciation for the care Beth’s mother, Jane Sherman, received last summer.
“Each year, we try to pick an outstanding local charity group,” said Tom, “A group that helps others and not just themselves, and especially a group that may have touched part of our family (such as Samaritan did with my mother-in-law) this past summer.”
Beth said, “We couldn’t be more appreciative of the care my mom received in the Inpatient Hospice Center after being diagnosed and treated for very late-stage gallbladder cancer. It was so serene and peaceful and the nurses and staff could not have been kinder. They helped us honor my mom’s wishes.”
“My mom would have wanted me to give back,” she continued. She grew up in a Philadelphia home of very modest means, but she was a very giving person all her life. She would have backed me 1001% in supporting Samaritan.”
The Ronketty’s light their Marlton home at 58 King Avenue from 5:00-10:00 pm each night from Thanksgiving until the first week in January. During that period, they have become accustomed to people driving by or getting out of their cars for a closer look.
In previous years, when Channel 3 or Channel 10 would give them a few days’ notice of live coverage, Beth and Tom would race into action to prepare for the hundreds who come out in response to the network’s website posting. Local restaurants such as Chick-fil-A, Shanghai Express and Marcello’s have provided food,” said Beth. “Chick-fil-A has even brought their cow!”
On live coverage nights, Beth, her cousin Carol Ramos and other volunteers have brewed gallons of coffee and hot cocoa and Tom has set up a DVD projector in their yard to play holiday movies for the kids. “We even get into costume,” Beth added. “I’m the reindeer and my husband or father, Bill Sherman, has dressed up as Santa!”
Now in their seventh year, the Ronketty’s have wonderful memories and poignant stories to last a lifetime. “Folks have told us that they were going through painful divorces or family problems and would just come and sit in their car with their kids to lift their spirits,” said Beth.
Tom shared, “One of my assistant managers asked if he could get married in front of the lights, which would have been special enough, but then a limo pulled up and a man from South Philly got out along with his Italian grandmothers and aunts. He was having them chauffeured around to see the area’s prettiest displays. They got more than they bargained for because they stayed for the wedding!”
One night, Tom and Beth opened their door to find a local pastor with more than 40 members of his church’s student ministry singing Christmas carols. When the surprised couple tried to give them some money in appreciation, the pastor said they were there to thank the family for the joy they bring their community.
Their most touching experience came two years ago when they found a letter to Santa in the donation barrel with a donation of $.76. It was from a little girl who asked Santa to bring her family just one gift: a Christmas tree of their own.
When Tom found that the girl’s family had fallen on hard times, he got permission from his corporate office to donate a fully lighted and decorated tree. He and Beth worked with Evesham’s Fire and EMT Departments to have them deliver not only the tree, but gifts for the family!
Samaritan is so thankful this holiday season to be included in the Ronketty’s remarkable generosity, but Beth and Tom remain selflessly humble.
“We started doing this just for us, because we enjoy the decorations and the lights,” said Beth. But now, we do it for the community. This year is extra special. We are telling everyone that my mom will certainly be the “brightest light in our holiday lights” this year! I know she will be here with us.”
Samaritan Volunteers Giving Back on Thanksgiving

Hospice patients and their families receive Thanksgiving baskets to ease the holiday burden
Giving Thanks, Preserving Memories, now in its tenth year, works with nearly 100 volunteers just before Thanksgiving to prepare 500 meals for 130 families in the South Jersey area. The volunteers put together baskets consisting of meals, hand-crafted table decorations, cameras and frames and other items that would help preserve the memories of what could be a last Thanksgiving holiday together.
Samaritan volunteers Laurie DePerro and her two daughters, Alexa and Larissa, delivered a Thanksgiving basket to Samaritan patient William Pierce and his family. CBS Philly online reporter Crystal Cranmore chronicled their journey to Pierce’s house.
Here are some behind the scenes photos from that day.

A Thanksgiving Message from Samaritan President/CEO Mary Ann Boccolini

As I prepare again to celebrate Thanksgiving with my family, I am filled again with a deep sense of gratitude for the non-material riches they bring to my life – the laughter, stories and prayers that we share.
Thanksgiving, of course, signals the start of a season of gatherings among family, friends, co-workers, neighbors. This season offers us the chance to savor gratefulness while also experiencing the great fullness of life amid the cycles by which we measure our days, our joys, our milestones.
Melodie Beattie writes, “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity…It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.”
As the President/CEO of Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice, I am privileged to witness this celebration of the natural cycles of life both personally and professionally on a daily basis. For, just as family and friends gather to welcome new life into a family, join their voices to sing “Happy Birthday” wishes or shed tears of joy as young lovers wed, so do families gather their presence to support, care for and yes, celebrate, the lives of loved ones with limited time on this earth.
One volunteer who recently lost a cherished daughter-in-law told how her family, amidst their sorrow, spent several beautiful evenings having “old-fashioned sleep-overs” at the hospital laughing, reminiscing and celebrating her life. Another patient’s daughter wrote of her family gathering around her mom, “Laughter and memorable stories enveloped the room, and through tears, we sang, danced, watched her favorite movies…and paid tribute to her every way we could think of. This time could not have been more perfect and we will cherish this week as we cherish everything else that made our lives rich with Mom.”
While Samaritan witnesses these life-enriching gatherings 365 days a year, we are especially mindful of the poignancy of supporting families facing the end of a cherished life around the holidays or providing counseling to those grieving during a season of festivities.
Clarissa Pinkola Estes, PH.D. writes, “Of all the gifts people can give to each other, the most meaningful and long lasting are a strong but simple love and the gift of story.”
So, as you celebrate each gathering this holiday season, take time to create memories that form stories that will enrich your family’s legacy for generations to come.
Take time to open dialogues, listen and record what each person’s wishes are now and in the future when health issues might prevent them from speaking for themselves. Our hospice provides easy-to-understand Advance Directive booklets. These guides assist families to raise delicate subjects — “talk turkey” if you will — and provide comforting roadmaps when the time to make difficult decisions arrives.
Take time to reach out for help if you are feeling overwhelmed in caring for a loved one or grieving a recent or past loss. Samaritan and many other social service agencies in our community stand ready to help during each important phase in your family’s life cycle.
Dr. Jill Henry has written, “Take the time to honor each stage of life, to experience each phase fully and openly, and then move on … cherish whatever season you are in, knowing that life changes, and you will be soon moving into another season, and another.”
By focusing on what’s important and experiencing each gathering in the great fullness of life, my wish is that each of us will enjoy the most meaningful season of our lives!
